Unidentified Flying Objects, or UFOs, have been navigating earthly skies since Alexander the Great’s army first spotted them in 329 BC. Coming in a variety of shapes, and with different flight paths and light signals to boot, UFOs haven't only occupied humankind’s popular literature, but have made alien-obsessed people out of many fascinated watchers.

Part of the excitement comes with the fact that UFOs are unidentified: are they weather balloons on fire? Light spacecraft tested for durability by a secret Air Force group? Or are they simply alien craft? These speculations have added fuel to the question: what kind of technology do these UFOs have that enable them to fly to our planet from distant regions of the galaxy?

Given the characteristics of UFOs, what might this technology be?

• UFOs fly at incredible speeds without breaking the sound barrier – Supersonic planes are made of high grade metal alloys, allowing such planes to withstand the impact of the sound barrier as soon as the plane gets past the speed of sound. It is this deep “sonic boom” most people hear – but where is this sonic boom when UFOs start traveling at thousands of miles per hour?

UFO occupants may have discovered a special alloy that not only breaks the laws of physics, but seems to be durable in the earth’s atmosphere. Since UFOs fly fast and quickly change direction, their material may be both strong and lightweight. Could our space agencies find such an alloy one day, allowing us to make our own spacecraft?

• UFOs leave a trail of damage behind – UFO sightings are usually accompanied by mutilated cattle, scorched ground, or humans suffering from apparent radiation poisoning – and sometimes, without the UFO even touching the ground.

What technology could UFO occupants have that they can wreak havoc at a distance, and without the use of apparent force? Might such technology be use on earth one day?

• UFOs can disrupt electronic and navigational equipment – Without the use of apparent force, UFOs can cause cars to break down, phones to shut off, and compasses to go haywire. What frequency, or energy, are they emitting? Can this energy be utilized for our own needs on earth?

With all these technologies apparently possessed by these strange visitors, another question might be asked: how can humans harness the technology to fly out of earth and see the rest of the universe? Perhaps one day, the lights and materials that make up UFOs will be ours, and we, in turn, will fly our own UFOs and be aliens in another world.
